A couple years ago, I did it! I had accomplished my goal and reached my desired weight and body fat percentage. Once the measurements were taken and the data was recorded, I was stoked...well, kind of. At that moment, I found myself thinking, “Wait…that’s it?”
I had put in a lot of hard work under a long period of time to achieve my exciting goal only to realize that I would feel just about as excited as one would sitting in a Bay Area traffic jam—not so thrilled, and a little let down. After confiding in a few highly respected and influential people about this observation, I found that there was something I was forgetting along the way. I hadn’t enjoyed and cherished the process—I was only focused on the outcome.
A few things to keep in mind as you continue on the journey towards your "life-changing" goal:
- While you have set a very commendable goal for yourself, realize that it may or may not be as fulfilling as you had imagined once you achieve it.
- Self-compassion is a key component in ensuring that you are enjoying the process. There will be days where you “fail” and you might not always have someone to pat you on the back. Pat yourself on the back every single day. After all, you are in the process of changing your life. You deserve it!
- Record and document. These are the experiences that you will be looking back on. Having something to refer back to will help you remember why you started and will be a good source of motivation to maintain and to set other goals.
- The process can seem long, grueling and possibly boring in the beginning. Find a friend or trainer who can be a great positive influence along the way and to help hold you accountable.
Remember, this is going to be a long road to travel. There is a possibility that you may not be as content as you once thought you would be in the end, but have you ever paused to take in the moment? Inside the trenches is where your real growth takes place. If you can just focus your attention while in the thick of it, then you’ll find the destination to be much more rewarding.
I, myself, have found that the above points have made living a healthy lifestyle much more stress-free and effective. I guess you could say, this is how you get more bang for your buck!
“Now and then, it’s good to pause in our pursuit of happiness and just be happy.” -Guillaume Apollinaire
