Time to Tighten Up!
I don’t know about you, but this holiday season flew by faster than two shakes of a lamb’s tail! ...Sorry about that Pulp Fiction reference. I just recently re-watched it and, unfortunately for you, there were a couple of one-liners fresh on tap.
The year has come and gone and for most of us, no matter how much time we've invested in staying organized, there is still a lot of decluttering to be done (both mentally and physically). “How do you do that?”, ya say? I’m glad you asked! Below, I have provided you with five great ways to do just that!
1. Start and end your day by organizing.
At the end of the day write down the single most important item that you feel needs to be completed the next day. Start simple. Focus on that one thing and make sure it is completed—like your life depended on it. Too easy for ya? In that case, write down two or three additional “must do’s” alongside a few “no brainer” tasks. Checking this task and/or tasks off not only gives you control over your day, but it just feels good to say “DONE!”. Almost as good as coming home to an already made bed, no?
2. Put those pants away.
Make an agreement with yourself that no matter how late you are for dinner or how tired you may be after a long day that you’ll pick up those socks or pants you left on the floor earlier that day or evening. The best thing about this one is that it can be a quick task to accomplish. Grab one article of clothing and toss it into the hamper or get crazy and scoop everything up in one shot! Get ‘er done right then and there instead of wasting time later worrying about it. It’ll be off your mind and you’ll be able to focus on whatever else you’ve got going on.
3. Out with the old and in with the new.
So, you finally clicked “Purchase” on that brand new item off Amazon. After you have purchased that “treat yourself” item then do yourself a favor and get rid one or two items. This helps you ensure that the things taking up space in your home are necessities and to be more aware of the material things that you actually need and not want.
4. If it takes less than 5 minutes, get it done right then and there.
This one is pretty self-explanitory, right? This one actually goes hand-in-hand with #1. As much as a chore or a nuisance as it may seem, ask yourself “How long would it take me to do this?” If it takes less than five minutes then just do it.
5. At the end of the week Reassess.
Look at what you did all week and ask yourself “How’s that working for me?” Start slow and implement one thing at a time. If you need to adjust some habits, then do so. It’s all about trial and error- don’t get stuck in a routine that is not working for you.
