Q&A Week 3—Adios, Belly Fat!

Today's question is from my good friend and hair stylist extraordinaire, Garik Gasparyan.
"What is the best was to get rid of body fat?" he asks.
This is one of the most common questions that I get on a regular basis. Ironically enough, it comes with the most common answer that I give to people when they ask me any fitness or nutrition question—it depends.
Like many situations in life, there are too many variables involed to depend on one exact solution for all. Let's go over a few of them...
Not managing your stress levels from your day-to-day life can not only have an impact on your daily activities, but it can also cause your hormone levels to become imbalanced. This can prevent or slow the process of building lean muscle.
In the book, "Fat Loss Happens on Mondays", co-author Josh Hillis says that the quality of your food will always equate to your body fat percentage—and I agree. Try as much as possible to include lean protein, healthy fats and fibrous, nutrient-dense carbs with every meal. "Eat like an adult" —Dan John, or "Eat Your Age Not Your Shoe Size!" —me.
Sleep hygiene is another one of those habits that we tend to take for granted. A consistent full night's sleep is a key component to reducing that darn belly fat. If you are curious and would like to learn more, check out the book "Sleep Smarter" by author Shawn Stevenson. An outstanding read!
Maintaining a regimented, resistance training program is another huge piece of having a tighter tummy. Research has shown that some people simply show better results when they stick to a loaded (only body weight or weighted) exercise program versus an aerobic exercise program (i.e.: only jogging every day).
Stress, quality nutrients, sleep, and exercise are all key factors in getting the tight tummy that you may be looking for. These are all just a few different pieces of the overall puzzle.
