Q&A Week 1— Rice or Quinoa?

What's happening guys?!...

This month’s Motivational Monday series will be focused on Q&A. That's right! Ask me anything, and I will be choosing four random questions to answer the motivational emails you receive weekly!

So, with that being said...

What is the one thing that you are dying to know about your health and fitness?
OR
What is the one thing that you are dying to know about cooking healthy meals?

Email me your question(s) or shoot it over via text to (510) 409-5077.

I have decided to start off with a question from my buddy Steven from The Re Investors.

Q: Should I eat more Quinoa or Rice?
A: Great question, Steven... it depends.

Considering that there are no chronic illnesses, food intolerances or disorders involved, this would all depend on a few things.

Quinoa has fantastic health benefits and is naturally gluten-free. It promotes good gut health and is very high in minerals. It tends to also be a higher in fiber than brown or white rice.

Rice has been around FOREVER. It is also gluten-free but has a below average amount of nutritional value compared to quinoa.

One of the most important considerations when it comes to rice or quinoa is their glycemic indexes. The glycemic index is the measurement of how fast food will cause a spike in an individual's blood glucose (sugar). Rice takes the lead with an index of 73 while quinoa follows behind with 53. Quinoa would be your winner due to its low glycemic index, gluten free properties, and higher nutritional level. Not to mention the fact that it contains all the essential amino acids.

The amount of carbs that we should consume depends on our activity levels and body size. The recommended minimal intake of carbs is about 130 grams per day for the general population folk. Less active, smaller, sedentary people need fewer carbs while more active and/or bigger people need more. Remember though, it's also all about choosing the best source of carbs.

With all that being said I would go with quinoa. However, that is what goes well with my lifestyle and activity levels.

Choosing quinoa over rice means that you will be choosing a slower carbohydrate breakdown from a lower glycemic food. This means that you will stay fuller longer and maintain better body composition. When going with a higher glycemic food like rice, try to consume before a workout or run!

Looking forward to answering more of your questions!

Be Well,
Coach Chris
